“There is not one human problem that could not be solved if people would simply do as I advise.” - GV

"Gore Vidal, the elegant, acerbic all-around man of letters who presided with a certain relish over what he declared to be the end of American civilization, died on Tuesday. He was 86."  -NY Times

As the Times goes on to say, he believed himself to be the last of a breed and he was likely right.

  1. I still remember quite clearly the interchange between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley Jr. at the 1968 Democratic Convention, when Buckley lost it, so exasperated by Vidal he just completely blew his top!

This incident destroyed any chance Television would offer live discussions between any two people who were articulate, thinking beings ever again! One of my favorite TV minutes of all time!

I feel the same way about "American Civilization" Ghandi felt about "Western Civilization", that it would be a good idea. Each generation attempts to paint a picture of itself as the pinnacle of accomplishment, the zenith of a Golden Age, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Today's Fascist wants the same thing they wanted in the 1930's. Today's Plutocrat is just as determined to prosper on the backs of the poor and different. A real civilization would take care of its people, allow all to exercise their rights as citizens and still leave room for prosperity for those who work for it.

As a society, we seem to have tunnel vision. We seem to operate on the theory that in order for me to win, you have to lose. It doesn't need to be that way but as long as people refuse to see it any other way, it will continue.
