Justices Approve Strip-Searches for Any Offense (Headline on today’s New York Times web site)

Another stunner from the conservatives on the Supreme Court! The smaller-government-is-better people have decided it’s ok to strip you naked if you’re arrested for speeding, or for walking your dog without a leash.

Justice Kennedy wrote that the jails’ procedures in the case before the court “struck a reasonable balance between inmate privacy and the needs of the institutions.” Wait a minute. “A reasonable balance”? Where’s the balance? The inmate – in this case a man falsely arrested because of a clerical error – was stripped naked and his genitals and every orifice were examined. His privacy was totally shredded. And this, says Kennedy, is balance?

A reaction posted to the Times web site says it all: “Start practicing your goosesteps now, people.”

I would say it’s time for the citizens of the U.S. to wake up, rise up, march in the streets and protest this latest bit of fascist governmental meddling – but I am not saying that, for, were I to say that I’d likely be arrested.

And stripped.

And that wouldn’t be pretty.
